Nokia announced the first S60 smartphone with Touch Screen.

Nokia 5800 XpressMusic (and not XpressMedia) aka Tube is finally a reality.
In the same Nokia Remix event in London UK that Nokia announced Comes with Music service and Symbian S60 5th edition Nokia also announced the first device based on S60 5th edition and that is no other than the long rumored, long awaited Nokia Tube.

Nokia 5800 XpressMusic smartphone belongs in the midrange category but once you see the specs you will realize that Nokia sets very high standards for this product and what Nokia describes as midrange surely blows away most of its High-end competitors.

Some of Nokia’s 5800 specifications are as follow:

QuadBand GSM, and 3G (2100 for Europe and 850/1900 for USA)

3.2 Megapixel camera with VGA Video Recording and Dual Led light

3.2 inch nHD Touch Display 640X360

Tactical Feedback

TV-Out

WiFi b/g and Bluetooth

150MB internal memory with SD slot and 8GB SD card in the box

GPS

S60 5th Edition

Full Internet Browser with Adobe Flash support

Video and Image editor right out of the box

Stylus and finger navigation

With such specification Nokia 5800 XpressMusic has nothing to be jelus of its high-end brothers. If you compare it with current high-end Nokia Symbian S60 smartphones such as the Nokia N95 and Nokia N85 the main differences you going to spot is the 3.2MegaPixel Camera instead for the 5Megapixel in N95 and N85. In fact 5800 offers many great additions that other Nokia High-end smartphones does not have such as the huge 16:9 touch display with nHD resolution. Such a screen makes 5800 the perfect Multimedia house especially for watching movies on the go and Browsing.

What is really midrange on Nokia 5800 is definitely its price. Nokia set a price of 279 euros that is equal to about $390. With that price and those specifications Nokia is offering a heck of a good deal.

Nokia 5800 XpressMusic is expected to be available worldwide on Q4 of this year, what exactly does this means is that according to Nokia, 5800 XpressMusic will be available sometime between now and the end of the year.Check complete Nokia 5800 XpressMusic Specifications & Video Reviews

As part of its bid to move beyond high-end smartphones, Symbian has licensed mobile imaging software from Swedish company Scalado. The addition will make Symbian’s OS more attractive for mid-range mobile phones, according to the company.

Scalado’s technology is already used in phones from Sony Ericsson, Samsung, LG and others, but the agreement will make it easier and cheaper for Symbian licensees to use the Scalado technology, according to Anthony Newpower, director of product management at Symbian.

For Scalado, instead of having to negotiate separate deals with different phone vendors, its software will become part of the OS and automatically turn up on all Symbian phones, according to Magnus Ingelsten, vice president of marketing at Scalado.

The agreement includes version 9.3 and 9.4 of Symbian OS, and is offered to licensees without additional royalties. The software will improve Symbian’s imaging performance, including faster rendering, scaling and rotation and better image editing features, as well as reducing memory consumption.

The part about reduced memory consumption explains why Symbian thinks the agreement will make its OS more attractive for use in mid-range phones.

“It means that a mid-range phone with a fixed Bill of Materials (BOM) for RAM could include a higher quality camera with Scalado technology than it could without, providing additional value-added differentiation and segmentation,” said in Newpower.
